The Artist, a newly released silent film, has been sweeping the world off its feet with its little dialogue and black and white picture. This trailer portrays a somber yet energetic feel at various parts throughout. At one point, the music is up beat and peppy with the main use of brass wind instruments, then at others, it's using all strings producing a dramatic, serious tone. The viewer is constantly guided through different aspects that these two people are experiencing with only a few periodic words popping onto the screen giving a basic and general overview of what is bound to happen in the next few scenes. The key to understanding this trailer is decoding the facial expressions which must be over dramatic in order for the audience to understand to make up for the silent film. Throughout the duration of this clip, anger, humor, happiness, despair, and multiple other expressions can be deciphered from the actors and actresses. Aside from the music and acting, the wardrobe can also help understand the film even better. The young woman appears to be a flapper with her short hair and rather revealing clothes for the time period which forecasts a rebellious and free spirited character.
